Hard Ash

Wheeler Geologic Area, Colorado

Sunrise light in the bizarre formations of the Wheeler Geologic Area near Creede - September.

Unlike the other mountain ranges of Colorado, the San Juans have a volcanic history. Between 35 - 5 million years ago, the San Juans consisted of large stratovolcanoes and calderas which smothered the land with enormous flows of volcanic ash that consolidated over time into thick layers of tuff. The exposed and eroded tuff at the Wheeler Geologic Area is a prime example. The nearby present day town of Creede is located right over one of the ancient calderas, which is still visible in the topography in satellite images. Photo © copyright by Jack Brauer.
